The Lone Shopping Cart
Every day, we walk past scenes like this without giving them a second thought. Most of us see a shopping cart and instinctively write a story: Someone was lazy. Someone didn't care. Someone couldn't be bothered to return it.
Maybe.
Or maybe someone received a phone call they never expected. Maybe a parent was trying to calm a frightened child. Maybe an elderly shopper had reached the end of their strength. Or maybe it really was carelessness.
The truth is, we don't know.
And that's the point.
Beneath almost every ordinary moment is something we cannot see—fear, stress, grief, shame, hope, relief, exhaustion, or love. We don't respond to what people are carrying. We respond to what they're doing. And those are rarely the same thing.
What if the shopping cart wasn't evidence of one person's character at all? What if it was simply the place where two unseen stories crossed paths?
